UPDATE: Person dies from injury after officer-involved critical incident in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has confirmed the person involved in an officer-involved shooting in Green Bay has died from their injuries.

The involved officer is from the Green Bay Police Department and has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

The involved officer was wearing a body camera during the incident and the Green Bay Police Department has squad cameras.

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, Wisconsin State Patrol, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office, DCI Crime Response Specialists, and members of DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit.

“This is very early in what will undoubtedly be a very long and very detailed investigation,” said Green Bay police chief Chris Davis.

All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

Those who live in the area tell Local 5 News that they can’t believe something like this happened in their neighborhood.

“Just drove by and I see all the cops and I’m like what the heck is going on, nothing like this ever happens,” said Daniel Van Kauwenberg. “I know a lot of people in this neighborhood, I’m just hoping that nobody that I knew got hurt.”

One person hospitalized during officer-involved critical incident in Green Bay

FRIDAY, 02/23/24, 4:17 p.m.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis has confirmed during a press conference Friday’s shooting is now considered an officer-involved critical incident.

Davis said shortly before 1:00 p.m., officers received a report of a disturbance between two vehicles possibly involving a weapon.

Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle matching the description, and there was an exchange of gunfire. Chief Davis confirmed the officer involved was not injured, but one person was hit by gunfire and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations is handling the incident and is expected to release more information.

UPDATE: Active police presence near Green Bay’s W. Mason St. due to shooting, avoid the area

FRIDAY, 2/23/24 – 2:00 p.m.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Green Bay Police Department has provided an update on the large police presence on the City’s west side, saying it is due to a shooting on Open Gate Trail.

A release from the GBPD states that officers and first responders are at the scene of a shooting in the 3100 block of Open Gate Trail after a reported weapon call just before 1 p.m. on February 23.

The following streets have been closed off due to the incident:

  • Green Ridge Drive is closed at West Mason Street to Open Gate Trail
  • Open Gate Trail is closed from Rolling Green Drive to Square Terrace

Officers are asking the public to avoid the area as they are expected to be on the scene for ‘an extended period of time.’

Original story: Active police presence near Green Bay’s West Mason Street

FRIDAY, 2/23/24 – 1:45 p.m.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – An active police presence is currently near the area of West Mason Street and Green Ridge Drive on Green Bay’s west side.

Little is known at this time. However, Local 5 has a crew on the scene. The incident is in the vicinity of Green Ridge Drive and West Mason Street.

Local 5 News crews say there are multiple squad cars and first responders at the scene. Crews can also see crime scene tape blocking off an area.
