U2 received a public invitation to perform a free concert at Mexico City’s Zócalo during the band’s recent visit to the Mexican capital.
Mexico City officials said the invitation was extended as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. were in town filming scenes for a new music video in the city’s Historic Center. Clara Brugada, the head of government of Mexico City, welcomed the band and encouraged them to return for a large public performance in one of the country’s most symbolic gathering places.
The Zócalo has hosted major cultural and music events over the years, drawing massive crowds for free concerts by international and Latin artists. A U2 performance there would add another major moment to the band’s long relationship with Mexican audiences.
U2 has performed in Mexico several times across its career, including large stadium shows that drew strong fan support. Bono also expressed affection for Mexico City during the visit, saying the band loves the city.
No concert date has been announced.
