OAKFIELD, Wis. (WFRV) – Students in Fond du Lac County were released early Friday after a reported burning odor inside a school building.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, around 9:30 a.m. a deputy assigned to Oakfield Schools received a report from a staff member at the middle/high school about a burning smell.

The school resource officer responded and notified the sheriff’s office. Out of an abundance of caution, officials evacuated all students and staff from the middle/high school.
The Oakfield Fire Department responded, along with a hazmat team from the Fond du Lac Fire Department.
Preliminary findings indicated elevated levels of freon inside the building, believed to have originated from a rooftop air conditioning unit and migrated into an office area. The exact source remains under review by the district’s HVAC contractor.

School administration decided to release middle and high school students for the remainder of the day.
No injuries were reported. Officials said no additional information is being released at this time.
