FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – No one is said to be hurt after improperly disposed of smoking materials started a kitchen fire inside a Fond du Lac apartment on Tuesday night.
According to a release from the Fond du Lac Fire Rescue, crews responded around 7:20 p.m. to an apartment on 143 West Division Street for reports of a fire.
Crews arriving at the eight-unit apartment building saw smoke coming from an open second-floor window. Firefighters searched the apartment, finding it clear of any occupants.

Crews then found a small, smoldering fire in the kitchen of the apartment unit and extinguished it within five minutes of their arrival on the scene.
No one was hurt in the incident despite neighboring apartment units needing to be evacuated. The affected apartment was lightly damaged by smoke and fire, but after proper ventilation of the building, all residents were able to return to their units.
Officials say the cause of the fire was determined to be from improperly disposed of smoking materials. The public is being reminded to be careful with smoking materials and to always dispose of them in a proper receptacle.
