(WFRV) – Nationwide, groups gathered to commemorate the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, annually held on May 5.
Advocates highlighted that it’s critical to commemorate the day as it surrounds an issue often forgotten, even as it continues to impact indigenous communities nationwide.

Data shows that native women face far more danger in terms of violent crime rates, with murder rates up to 10 times the national average, with 80% reporting that they experience some form of violence during their lives.
Lawmakers and groups in Madison gathered in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday to commemorate the Day of Awareness with speakers and survivors in attendance.
