KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV) – Warmer weather is on the horizon, prompting many people to prepare to use the equipment that’s been sitting in the garage all winter.

But that’s when people see various issues, according to Weyers Equipment Service Manager Derek Kuhlman.
“Once it warms up, people like to buy because they want something new, [because something] is not working correctly, or leaking,” Kuhlman said.
Common signs you need to take lawn equipment in are leaks on the garage floor, engines not running right, or noticing the grass is not being cut properly.
“Service would be getting your engine oil changed, fuel filter changes, etc,” Kuhlman said.
But waiting too long to fix those issues could result in more long-term problems.
“If you wait long, we are looking at 3 weeks backlogged,” Kuhlman said. “3-4 weeks before you see your lawnmower sometimes.”
Technicians like Mitchell Bruegge says the delays often as the seasonal surge begins.
“We do see a spike in equipment coming; it’s a whole variety of tractors coming in,” Bruegge said.
The good news is that many issues users run into are preventable by simple maintenance. Even small engines need yearly oil changes, just like a vehicle, as clean oil can extend an engine’s lifespan.
“We tell [our] customers that maintenance goes a long way,” Bruegge said. “If you get your oil changed every year, it’s going to be running better.”
Bruegge said one simple practice you can start at home is greasing.
“We tend to see people don’t grease much,” Bruegge said. “Anything that moves wants grease, so you don’t wear into metal bushings and framework. “

These preventable steps will help keep your equipment running when you need it most.
“Get your equipment ready for the summer so you have it for the summer, before you have a problem,” Kuhlman said.
