GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Winter weather isn’t just damaging roads across northeast Wisconsin; it’s also taking a toll on vehicles as auto repair shops reported a surge in cold-weather-related issues.

At Auto Select East in Green Bay, manager Jaramey Plager said service volume is up about 20% following the latest storm, in comparison to the previous week.
“We’re definitely seeing the effects of the snow,” Plager said. “We’re seeing a lot of starting problems, alternators, batteries, things like that.”
Other common issues Plager has seen lately include snow and ice buildup underneath vehicles, leading to suspension problems.
Cold temperatures also weaken car batteries, while slippery road conditions force an increase in collision-related repairs.
“Snow packed underneath vehicles can cause vibrations and noises,” Plager said.
While some winter-related damage is unavoidable, experts say routine maintenance can help limit the impact. Regular inspections can identify worn parts, leaks and battery issues before they become more serious.
Drivers are also urged to pay attention to changes in how their vehicle feels or sounds.

“If you’re hearing something abnormal or feeling something that doesn’t feel right, you’re probably right. Get it inspected,” Plager said.
Mechanics warn that delaying repairs can turn minor issues into more costly problems, making early attention key.
