“When I drew Will Smith, I thought that kind of sucks, I’m going to stop,” Patrick said. “I didn’t, and I’m pretty glad I didn’t.”
That first portrait sparked Patrick to draw every day until he found his niche—animal photos.

“I think I just started with people, and then I drew an animal one day and I enjoyed it,” Patrick said. “So, I stuck with that.”
He started a business called P. Bates Creates, now selling his art in local art shows, including Appleton’s Art in the Park, where he was named Young Artist of the Year—with some of his pieces displayed at the Trout Museum.

Patrick says it’s more than just recognition, it’s about giving back.
Patrick has donated more than $1,000 of his profits to J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue.
“If others are saying my art is really good, I might as well try to help others with it,” Patrick said. “Which is why I started donating it to the animal rescue.”
“Why don’t I donate some of my projects there? They have a sponsorship program, and it would be a good use of my money,” Patrick said.

Patrick’s mom Heidi says it’s been incredible to watch him grow as an artist and person.
“It’s an awesome experience to have his artwork out, and everyone is so supportive and kind,” Heidi said. “He’s getting affirmations, which is great, and being able to support the animals on top of that is the icing on the cake.”
Heidi also says he’s learning more than art.

“He’s not only found a talent, but he’s giving back the way he wants to give back.”
