The city is launching a new ‘Youth Commission,’ giving students ages 14 to 18 the opportunity to serve as an advisory body to the City Council. Up to 15 students will be appointed to one-year terms.
Mayor Boyd says the commission will meet once a month and feature guest speakers, including department heads and other city officials. The goal is to help students better understand how local government operates.
In addition to learning about city operations, students will be able to offer recommendations on city initiatives, propose new ideas and weigh in on issues affecting residents.
The group will be organized by Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Jessie Paque, who says the commission will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., with most meetings held in the Nicolet Conference Room at City Hall.
“It’s a great opportunity for the youth to get involved in local government. It will expose them from the bottom up,” Paque said. “It will also expose them to the careers we have in the city.”
