OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Faculty and members of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh community gathered in a ballroom at Reeve Memorial Union to hear an update on the university’s future.
Chancellor Manohar Singh and other university leaders spoke on a range of topics, including enrollment trends, campus improvements and potential cost-cutting measures.

Singh, who is in his second semester as chancellor, said he approaches the role with a personal commitment to the students and the institution.
“Given where we were a few years back to where we are today and where we are slated to be, it is a positive trajectory,” Singh said. “I see a rebound, and I see a path to resurgence.”
University officials reported a 91 percent retention rate from the fall semester to the current spring semester, with more than 5,500 undergraduate students enrolled.
Enhancements to campus facilities are also part of the long-term plan, including updates to the library and other improvements aimed at campus life.
A key topic during the discussion was the possibility of cost-cutting measures, including staffing. Singh emphasized that layoffs would be a last resort.

“We are looking at all possible data points and making sure, first, that we do not have to resort to layoffs,” Singh said. “Second, that we are equipped with staff and technology together so that we are well staffed and well equipped to serve our students without compromising the quality of academic offerings or the student experience.”
University leaders noted that enrollment has declined between 4 and 7 percent over the past seven years, with this academic year serving as an exception. Looking ahead, projections show enrollment decreasing by just 1 to 2 percent.
