WEST POINT, Wis. (WFRV) — A Nicaraguan national who had previously been deported from the United States and was wanted on a felony warrant was taken into custody following a traffic stop in late January.
According to authorities, a deputy was on patrol in the Town of West Point shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 30, 2026, when a vehicle was observed speeding and failing to dim high beams for oncoming traffic. A traffic stop was initiated.

The deputy made contact with the driver and determined the driver did not speak English. After attempting to communicate, the deputy obtained a name and date of birth, but a records check returned no results.
An interpreter service was then used to help obtain proper identification. Despite speaking with an interpreter fluent in the same language, the driver provided several different names and dates of birth and was unable to consistently identify himself. After nearly an hour of attempting to verify the driver’s identity using multiple resources, the deputy determined the driver was concealing his identity.
The driver was arrested for obstructing an officer and transported to a nearby jail, where fingerprinting identified him as Roberto B. Arauz, 47, a Nicaraguan national living in Prairie du Sac.

Authorities later learned Arauz was wanted on a felony warrant from a 2022 Dane County case that includes charges of sexual assault, false imprisonment, strangulation, battery and disorderly conduct. Investigators also confirmed Arauz had previously been deported from the United States in 2023.
Arauz appeared in court on Feb. 2, 2026, where a cash bond was set at $500.
