BROOKFIELD, Wis. (WFRV) – On Saturday night, officers responding to a crash in southeastern Wisconsin were met with unexpected gunfire by the suspect, who had previously fled the scene.
According to a release from the City of Brookfield Police Department, officers were called to a crash on Barker Road, north of North Avenue, around 10:30 p.m. on January 31.
When authorities got to the scene, they were reportedly told that a person involved in the crash had fled the scene on foot.

While searching for the suspect nearby, officers were allegedly ‘suddenly’ shot at by the suspect. An officer with Brookfield PD reportedly returned fire and hit the suspect.
The suspect, only described as a 31-year-old man, was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment of ‘serious’ and ‘potentially life-threatening injuries.’ No officer was shot, but one suffered minor injuries while responding to the incident.
It was noted in the release that the officer who returned fire is a 24-year-old who was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

“The preliminary investigation into this matter indicates officers performed their duties courageously, professionally, and within the confines of the law and department expectations,” the release stated.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is investigating the incident with the Milwaukee PD as the lead agency.
