TWO RIVERS, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials in Two Rivers say a new agreement between energy resource companies will secure the city clean and reliable nuclear energy into the 2050s.
According to a release from the City of Two Rivers, the new agreement between the City, its not-for-profit power supplier, WPPI Energy, and NextEra Energy Resources will continue to allow the use of nuclear power at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant to meet local electricity needs.
Long-term access to clean, reliable nuclear energy is a major win for both sustainability and economic stability in Two Rivers. Point Beach Nuclear isn’t just an emissions-free power source, it’s one of our region’s most important employers, providing high-skill, high-wage jobs that support families and strengthen our local economy. This power agreement helps secure a sustainable energy future while preserving an anchor institution that has shaped this community for generations.

Officials say the Point Beach Nuclear Plant has provided emissions-free baseload generation and has supplied dependable power in the region since the early 1970s.

WPPI is expected to continue to take 168 megawatts of electric generation from the plant from now and into the 2050s.
Maintaining a diverse, balanced portfolio is one of the WPPI membership’s greatest strengths. Securing this emissions-free baseload resource at a known cost supports long-term stability for our member communities in a rapidly changing energy industry.
Mike Peters, president and CEO of WPPI
The new agreement comes following the approval of the plant’s license renewal in September. The license renewal was approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and allows the Point Beach Nuclear Plant to continue operating for an additional 20 years.
