According to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was at a home in Raymond, and killed a 38-year-old Milwaukee woman who was the mother of two, as well as the family’s dog.
The fire was investigated as a potential criminal case; however, at this time, it doesn’t appear to be a criminal incident.
According to the release, deputies were sent to the fire around 2:50 p.m. and witnessed noticeable smoke inside. A pair of officials at the scene reported two people still believed to be inside.
A deputy went into the garage and attempted to open the door, with heavy smoke pouring out as it filled the entirety of the space, but no flames were immediately visible. A deputy heard a child crying from the garage door.
A police chief at the scene attempted to push through the smoke and reach the girl; however, the officer was pulled back due to the hazardous conditions, and the deputy continued to hear crying from the basement stairs.
The deputy subsequently re-entered and ran towards the stairs, fortunately recovering the girl and taking her outside, likely saving her life.

“These first responders displayed extraordinary courage under life-threatening conditions,” Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said. “Their actions absolutely saved a little girl’s life. Lastly, we extend our deepest condolences to the family.”
Unfortunately, another person inside was still trapped, and the deputy was unable to perform a full rescue due to dense and continued smoke conditions. The 38-year-old woman was recovered by firefighters; however, she was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts failed.
