De Pere (WFRV) – At just 5’4″, Ryan Lutz might not turn heads walking onto the football field. But under the Friday night lights, the West De Pere senior running back has become one of the most dominant forces in Wisconsin high school football. He proves that heart, not height, is what truly makes a player stand tall.
Lutz has rushed for over 1,000 yards this season, averaging more than 130 yards per game. He leads the Phantoms in total touchdowns, playing a key role in powering West De Pere’s playoff hopes.
“We saw him as a freshman — he was small, quick, and had this aggressive running style,” said Phantoms head coach Chris Greisen. “Now in his senior year, he finally got his shot to start and everyone just went, ‘Woah.’”
Lutz credits his success to preparation and team effort.
“I think it just comes down to our preparation,” Lutz said. “Each week we do a great job getting ready. Having that in the back of my mind really helps me keep going.”
Yet it’s not just the stats that set Lutz apart. Off the field, he carries a 4.5 GPA, balancing the demanding schedule of a student-athlete with a level of focus and humility.
“His humility is what stands out,” said Chris Greisen. “He’s having a great year, doing so many great things for us, and he never changes. He stays even-keeled and always supports his teammates.”
That quiet leadership has earned the respect of both coaches and teammates. Phantoms quarterback Patrick Greisen praised Lutz’s work ethic and fearless playstyle.
“I never think of Ryan as the smallest guy out there because he’s got the biggest heart,” said Patrick Greisen. “He’s not afraid of anyone, and he’s earned everything he’s gotten. He worked all summer for this and he’s running with the opportunity.”
Lutz’s is the engine behind a West De Pere team hungry for another deep postseason run.
“He’s a quiet leader who leads by example,” his Chris Greisen. “He’s always positive, always encouraging the guys. He just comes out every day to work.”
With the playoffs approaching, Lutz’s determination — both on and off the field — is giving the Phantoms more than just yards and touchdowns. It’s giving them belief.
He may not be the biggest name on the roster, but Ryan Lutz has become one of the biggest reasons West De Pere football keeps on rolling.
