FOND DU LAC COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – It was an “extremely busy” Friday for deputies in Fond du Lac County who responded to at least four major incidents, including fires, an explosion, a school evacuation, and a pursuit.
Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt released a statement regarding the busy day on May 8, expressing his pride in the work of his colleagues, including dispatchers and emergency responders throughout the county.

Below is Sheriff Waldschmidt’s full statement:
Multiple fires, an explosion, a school evacuation and student reunification, and a pursuit. As sheriff, I cannot be prouder of the work of our dispatchers and fellow emergency responders across the county today. Dispatchers in the Communications Center, along with dozens of emergency responders throughout Fond du Lac County and beyond, were kept extremely busy today handling numerous simultaneous and overlapping serious calls for service. 911 calls were pouring in. The fire department and EMS radio frequencies were streaming constant tones paging out many fire departments and EMS to the various calls. Deputies and other law enforcement officers were responding, rerouting, diverting, and handling numerous manpower intensive situations to close roadways and assist with emergency evacuations and investigations. And thankfully, out of all of these situations, there were only a few minor injuries sustained in these incidents.

The first two incidents came in around 9:30 a.m. on Friday when Oakfield Schools received a report from a staff member at the middle/high school about a burning smell, and a boat fire spread to a pole shed in Calumet.

A few hours later, around 12:10 p.m., deputies assisted with a garage fire in North Fond du Lac, where high winds caused the fire to spread to several other garages and homes.
Then, around 1:10 p.m., a man from Illinois in a stolen vehicle was arrested after a wild police chase on I-41.
Hopefully, the weekend is a little quieter for the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.
