(WFRV) – After one full year of enforcement, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are reporting that nearly 72% of Wisconsinites now have REAL ID.
According to a release from WisDOT, obtaining a REAL ID remains optional; however, it may be important to get a REAL ID as it is required to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings throughout the country. (A passport is also acceptable.)
Obtaining a REAL ID is also simpler than what many would think. The first step is to use the Wisconsin DMV’s Online Appointment Scheduler to pre-fill any required applications, submit electronically (if eligible), and receive a checklist of the required documents needed to bring to the DMV after scheduling an appointment.

Officials say the documentation needed to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card must be the original document or a certified copy (not a photocopy, fax, or scan). As many documents as needed can be brought to show proof of the following categories:
- Proof of Name and Date of Birth
- Proof of Legal Presence in the U.S.
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Name Change (if someone’s name is different than what’s on their birth certificate, proof is needed for each name change)
- Proof of Address (two forms)
- Provide Social Security Number
WisDOT reports that those who already have a driver’s license or ID can obtain a REAL ID-compliant card for $14 (the cost of a replacement driver’s license) or for $16. There is said to be no additional charge if the upgrade takes place at the same time as the renewal of a license or ID.
