GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Two years ago, Kyle Krueger decided he needed to make a change in his life.

“I have two boys, and I reached a point where I was trying to get healthy, and it was pretty difficult cause I was pretty big,” Krueger said.
After talking about his goals with his doctor, he was referred to trainers at Aurora Bay Care Medical Hospital and started working out 5 days a week. But despite his progress, something wasn’t right.
“I noticed a discrepancy in high leg straight right to left,” personal trainer Regan Dahnert at Aurora BayCare Medical Center said.
As a previous college athlete, old injuries were beginning to take a toll on Krueger, getting used to aches at 51; however, he was introduced to sports physical therapy and started something new, blood flow restrictive therapy.
“What happens is the restriction of blood flow, we get low oxygen and that fatigues the muscle much faster,” physical therapist Katelyn Peterson at Aurora BayCare Medical Center said.
By limiting oxygen to his leg and using lighter loads, it tricks the muscle into working harder.
“When you get low oxygen to the muscle, it basically signals your brain, ‘hey, we need a growth hormone, we need things to build up that muscle,’” Peterson said.
Krueger immediately saw results and started to feel better.
“I definitely started to see strength pretty quickly. We’d finish the session, and I was able to walk out feeling like I had a full workout, but not the same pain I was normally having,” Krueger said.
Krueger’s improvement from the blood flow restriction process has helped him continue his weight loss journey.
“When you have less pain, you’re able to exercise at the level you want to train,” Dahnert said.
