CHICAGO (WGN) — A Chicago police officer was killed, and another is in critical condition after a shooting at a hospital on the city’s north side Saturday.
According to police, two officers were injured in a shooting at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, located in Lincoln Square.
According to officials from Endeavor Health, the alleged gunman was a patient who was in the custody of law enforcement and was brought in for treatment at around 9 a.m.
Hospital officials said the suspect was checked for weapons upon arrival and was escorted by law enforcement at all times, but he eventually managed to get hold of a gun and opened fire on the officers.
Aside from the officers, no patients or hospital staff were injured in the shooting.
Hospital officials later issued the following statement on the incident:
“An individual in custody of law enforcement was brought in to Swedish Hospital Emergency Department for treatment at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Saturday April 25, 2026. In accordance with Endeavor Health public safety weapon detection protocols, this individual was wanded upon arrival. He was escorted by law enforcement at all times. The individual later fired shots at the law enforcement officers and exited the hospital building. He was apprehended and remains in custody. No team members or patients were physically harmed as a result of this incident. The safety of our patients and team members remains our top priority. We are cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation and our deepest compassion remains with the officers and their families.“
Police have not confirmed the suspect’s identity yet.
