HORTONVILLE, Wis. (WFRV) – An election for Village Trustee in Hortonville quite literally came down to a coin flip—and that’s not an exaggeration or metaphor.

The Village Trustee race saw four candidates, with the top three earning the role; however, while Julie Arendet Vanden Heuvel and Therese Abitz were swiftly elected with 422 and 405 votes, respectively, Shauna Keel and Dalton Davis saw a rare phenomenon.
According to the Village of Hortonville’s unofficial results, both Davis and Keel received the same vote total of 356.
State Statute 5.01(4) deems that any legitimate tie in an election must be solved by ‘chance’ and thus, the Village Board of Canvassers flipped a coin to determine the third and final Trustee.

Davis was given tails while Keel was given heads, and the coin flip landed on tails, thus making Davis the third and final Village Trustee from the Spring Election.
