Federal prosecutors in Florida have subpoenaed former FBI Director James Comey as part of a wide-ranging probe into a prior investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
NewsNation, The Hill’s sister network, confirmed Comey was subpoenaed in the probe, which is also reviewing the previous investigations into President Trump, including the work of Obama-era intelligence officials.
Axios first reported the news.
Neither an attorney for Comey nor the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida responded to a request for comment.
It’s unclear exactly what information prosecutors might be seeking from Comey.
However, the Trump critic was previously charged in connection with making false statements to Congress by another Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in Virginia. That case was dismissed by a judge, however, who determined President Trump improperly appointed Lindsey Halligan shortly after her predecessor resigned over concerns with the case. Comey had also sought to have the case dismissed, arguing he did not lie during testimony with lawmakers.
The probe in Florida has sought information from several former officials, with both NBC and CBS reporting that at least 130 subpoenas have been issued since the investigation began last year.
That group includes a number of those previously targeted by Trump, including former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Former FBI employees Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who had texted about Trump during the 2016 investigation, were also subpoenaed.
