(WFRV) – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is in the early stages of exploring the addition of men’s wrestling to its athletic department – which would make it just the second Division I wrestling program in the state of Wisconsin.
Green Bay’s Athletic Director Josh Moon appeared on the ‘WI Wrestle’ podcast with Ben Askren, a 2008 US Olympic team member and National Champion, on Tuesday to discuss the rumors.
The university has begun laying the groundwork, including communication with Mike Moyer, the Executive Director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Those early conversations signal growing momentum behind what could be a major addition to the Phoenix athletic department.
For a wrestling program to become a reality, however, significant financial backing will be required. UWGB is actively working to secure early support, including seven-figure gifts, to help launch the program at a competitive level from the start.
“There may not be a better window than right now. If it doesn’t happen right now than it’s not going to happen a couple years from now. We have the right opportunity, right leadership in place, and I think people are hungry for it,” Moon said.
Northeast Wisconsin is loaded with wrestling talent. Kaukauna High School, just 33 miles south of UW–Green Bay, is one of the state’s premier programs, coming off six straight team state titles. Add in powerhouses like Luxemburg-Casco High School and Coleman High School, and it’s clear the region, and state, is rich with high-level talent.
“All the boxes are checked in terms of what we have in this region for talent, clearly, and people are really passionate about it,” Moon expressed.
