(WFRV) – Wisconsin DNR officials say that it was another great day out on Lake Winnebago as the opening weekend for sturgeon spearing season continued.
Although not as many as opening day, an impressive 375 lake sturgeon were harvested throughout the system on Sunday, February 15.

On Lake Winnebago, 300 lake sturgeon were harvested (43 juvenile females, 132 adult females, and 125 males). Most of the fish are still being harvested on the east side of the lake, where spearers tell DNR officials they still have areas of great water clarity.
After the opening weekend, this brings the totals on Lake Winnebago to 96 juvenile females, 371 adult females, and 312 males for a total of 779. This is 56% of the adult female harvest cap for Lake Winnebago.
The 90% trigger has been hit on the Upriver Lakes, meaning spearers with tags for the Upriver Lakes can continue until 1 p.m. Monday. At that time, the Upriver Lakes sturgeon spearing season will close.
DNR officials noted that 14 of the 375 lake sturgeon harvested on Sunday were over the 100-pound mark. Sunday’s largest fish was a 125-pound, 72.2-inch F4 female speared by Jamie Wilson.
