GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Wisconsin Humane Society has reduced dog adoption fees as shelters across the state experience a rising dog population.
Officials announced that adoption fees for “Benchwarmers” — dogs who have been available for adoption longer than average — are now being offered at a name-your-own adoption fee.

The Benchwarmer designation also includes increased promotional visibility, reduced fees, and eligibility for the organization’s Benchwarmer Tryout Program.
Through the program, prospective adopters can take a Benchwarmer dog home for up to seven days to determine whether the animal is a good fit for their household. At the end of the trial period, adopters may finalize the adoption online.

If the match is not successful, the dog can be returned to the Wisconsin Humane Society, where officials say the animal benefits from time spent outside the shelter environment.
The Wisconsin Humane Society says the initiative is designed to encourage adoptions while helping alleviate capacity pressures at its sheltering locations.
