Proehl, a 69-year-old man from Luxemburg, faces two charges in connection with the crash, which left the teenage girl dead and her father hospitalized.
According to a criminal complaint, Proehl was allegedly under the influence when he sped through a red light and struck a vehicle attempting to make a left turn onto Holmgren Way from Lombardi Avenue.
Officers were dispatched to the intersection around 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, and arrived within seconds. At the scene, a traffic signal was down, a dark Dodge pickup truck had front-end damage, and a silver sedan had significant damage to its front and passenger side.
The sedan was driven by a 45-year-old man, with his 17-year-old daughter riding in the passenger seat. Both were transported to the hospital, where the teen later died from her injuries.
Video footage reviewed by investigators showed the sedan stopped in the left-turn-only lane westbound on Lombardi Avenue, waiting in the intersection to complete the turn. A witness told police they saw the pickup truck go through a red light and heard a loud engine noise described as “revving.”
Proehl told officers he had consumed two beers about 90 minutes before the crash at a restaurant. According to the complaint, officers noted slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. The complaint also states Proehl appeared focused on discussing damage to his truck rather than the injuries caused by the crash.
