GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As bitter cold settles across northeast Wisconsin, animal care experts say pets, farm animals, and zoo animals all need extra attention to stay safe.
Bitter cold greets travelers arriving in Appleton from warmth
At Mulberry Lane Farm, co-owner Bonnie Keyes says cold-weather care starts with water, food and shelter.

“When the temperature is as low as it is right now, there is some special care that you have to take,” Keyes said. “Making sure they have a water source, adequate food and warm, dry bedding is crucial.”
Keyes says animals burn more calories in cold weather and need protection from windchill, even if they are used to being outdoors.
“Keeping in mind they are animals, they are used to the cold and weather swings,” Keyes said. “Keeping them out of the wind is crucial, so they have some type of barrier because they are affected by windchill just like humans are.”

For household pets, Corey Viars with the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Green Bay and Door County campuses says limiting time outside is key.
“Dogs — just keep the outside time to a minimum and keep those potty breaks real short,” Viars said.
He recommends shoveling a small patch in the yard or putting down straw and wiping paws when pets come back inside to prevent irritation from snow, ice, and salt. Viars also warns not to leave pets in vehicles during extreme cold.
At the NEW Zoo, education coordinator Angela Kawski says many animals can handle cold temperatures, but are given options.

“We make sure they have extra warmth, windbreaks, heat lamps, and extra bedding,” Kawski said. “They get to choose if they want to be inside or outside.”
Kawski says staff will bring animals indoors when conditions become extreme to keep them safe and healthy.
