The beginning of the season is on Monday, January 26, as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and DOR begin to accept and process individual income tax returns from 2025.
There are a variety of ways to file in Wisconsin, from state options to well-known programs to a personal accountant. Here are some options, courtesy of the DOR and some online services:
- WisTax—The DOR’s free online system lets Wisconsinites file state tax returns electronically, and it is open to all residents who pay taxes, if they are full-year residents with a valid state ID/driver’s license.
- Some of the new changes include expanded features for individuals who claim the Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Credit or need to amend a return
- Online Software—Various options exist, but some of the most popular are:
- Tax Accountant—Some people may prefer an in-person or actual individual to help with their taxes, oftentimes if a situation is complicated or just a general personalized experience to help. Yelp.com has a list of the top 10 rated in Green Bay.
- VITA or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance—The program offers free tax preparation help to eligible taxpayers with returns prepared for free by community organizations and IRS-certified volunteers.
The DOR says it encourages electronic filing, as it protects refunds and filers’ identities and allows for more accurate filing. In addition, it speeds up the refund process and reduces DOR costs, saving tax dollars.
According to the DOR, 93.3% of Americans filed individual tax returns electronically in Fiscal Year 2024, and the number reportedly increases every year.
The DOR’s ‘Where’s My Refund’ tool also offers a quick way to track your state tax refund; however, the federal refund can be tracked on the IRS website.
