MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Wisconsinites are proud to be from The Badger State, and they have plenty of reasons to be, and a new USA Today poll just gave them yet another.

According to USA Today’s 10 BEST Readers’ Choice Awards list for the Best Public Holiday Lights Display, the Holiday Tree at the State Capitol building in Madison was ranked among the top 10, coming in at No. 7.
The full explanation for Wisconsin’s Capitol Holiday Tree from that poll is here. The No. 7 ranking brought forth joy from state officials, including Governor Tony Evers, who expressed great pride and joy in the announcement via a release on Wednesday morning.
“We’re really jazzed to see Wisconsin’s Capitol Holiday Tree receive well-deserved national recognition,” Gov. Evers said via the release. “Part of what makes Wisconsin’s Capitol Holiday Tree so special is that the tree is decorated with handmade, one-of-a-kind ornaments.”
Those ornaments are sent in from children across the state every year, and this year’s theme was a Learning Tree, designed to celebrate academic professionals, from the bus drivers to the nurses to the teachers to the food service staff and every other person involved in education statewide.
This year’s tree is, of course, significant to all of Wisconsin, but it’s extra special for northeast Wisconsin, specifically in Oconto County, as it came from a local tree farmer. Local 5’s Blake Borths spoke to the man who donated this year’s tree back in November.

The tree lighting ceremony took place last week as Gov. Evers’s staffers and other guests attended to witness the beautiful tree shine brightly across the Capitol Rotunda.
