SUPERIOR, Wis. (WFRV) – An investigation is underway by the Wisconsin Department of Justice after an officer was shot following a traffic stop early Sunday morning.
According to a release from the Wisconsin DOJ, officers with the Superior Police Department responded early Sunday morning to reports of a potential domestic dispute. During the traffic stop, officials say the driver exited the vehicle and began firing a gun at the officer, striking him. Both the officer hit by the driver’s firearm and another officer on the scene fired back at the suspect.
Aid was then immediately given to the officer who had been shot after initiating the traffic stop. The officer was taken to a local hospital and later released. While aid was being given to the wounded officer, the suspect fled from the scene and later crashed the vehicle into a school building.
Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Superior Police Department, Duluth Police Department, and St. Louis County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Office, were able to arrest the suspect at 7:01 a.m.
