Green Bay (WFRV)- Soccer is often called “the world’s game,” and for Bay Port High School senior Woodlens Frederic, it truly is. Soccer has connected his past in Haiti to his new life in Wisconsin.
Nicknamed “Woody” by his teammates, Frederic is having an outstanding season. He’s already scored 15 goals for the Pirates and plays a key role on the team.
“He’s super dynamic,” said head coach Ryan DePrey. “We can play him as a forward or out wide. He’s very versatile.”
Frederic moved from Haiti to the United States in sixth grade. At the time, he didn’t speak any English and had to adjust to a completely new culture and school system.
“I didn’t know any English,” he said. “I had to go to school and also learn the language. I used to use an iPad to translate when talking to people. It’s been a fun journey.”
Throughout all the challenges, soccer was always there for him. It gave him confidence, helped him make friends, and became a big part of who he is. Over time, he grew into not just a talented player, but a leader on and off the field.
“Woody is a great player,” said teammate James Amtmann. “We’ve known him for years. Seeing how much he’s grown has been amazing.”
Fellow senior David Dougherty said Woody will be remembered for more than just his skills.
“He’s going to leave behind a kindness legacy,” Dougherty said. “Whenever a new player joins the team, especially transfers, he’s always the first to welcome them and be kind. That’s something people won’t forget.”
Teammate Conor Duff added, “He comes to practice ready to work. He’s serious, and he wants to win.”
For Frederic, each soccer game is more than just a competition — it’s a reminder of how far he’s come. In Haiti, he played pickup games in the streets. Now, he’s representing his school and making a name for himself.
“What makes me proud is that in Haiti, I didn’t have a school or a club team to play for — just street ball,” he said. “Now, I get to show my skills to the world. I’m proud of that.”
With younger players looking up to him, Woody is leaving a lasting impact at Bay Port, not just as a top goal scorer, but as someone who leads with heart and resilience.
“I think he’s going to leave a really big impact on our team and our culture,” said Coach DePrey. “I hope the younger players say, ‘I want to be the next Woody.’”
Frederic’s story proves to athletes everywhere that where you start doesn’t define how far you can go.
