GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — A new story trail at Red Smith Community School is giving students and families a chance to combine outdoor exploration with literacy.
Agriscience teacher Sarah Valentine envisioned the project as a way to promote reading and time in nature. Thanks to a grant from the Green Bay Area Public Schools Education Foundation and support from several local partners, the trail is now a reality.

The Story Trail spans a half-mile loop with 18 signposts. Each sign displays a page spread from a children’s book, allowing families to enjoy a story while walking the trail. The first featured title is Wonder Walkers by Micha Archer. The grant will fund new stories throughout the year.

The Green Bay Conservation Corps prepared the trail by clearing seven acres of invasive buckthorn and mulching the path. Girl Scout Troop 4536 helped place benches, while the City of Green Bay Parks Department installed the signposts.
“This project is a wonderful collaboration that highlights how our schools and community can come together to create meaningful experiences for kids,” said Jill Thiede, vice chair of the GBAPS Education Foundation board.
