SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Sheboygan County have released additional details following a series of crashes on State Highway 23 Thursday morning, including one involving nine vehicles that left a man with life-threatening injuries.
According to officials, the initial crash began when a 79-year-old woman from Sheboygan attempted a U-turn in her vehicle at Sunset Road while traveling westbound on State Highway 23. She turned into the path of a 19-year-old Sheboygan man driving his vehicle eastbound, causing a collision that disabled both vehicles in the eastbound lanes.
The disabled vehicles led to a chain-reaction crash involving five more vehicles. A 22-year-old Plymouth man sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Froedtert Hospital in Waukesha. A 37-year-old woman from Glenbeulah, driving her vehicle, was seriously injured and taken to Aurora Sheboygan. Two juvenile passengers in her vehicle were treated for minor injuries at the same hospital.
The 79-year-old driver of the Cadillac will be cited for failure to yield the right of way, causing injury.
In a separate incident west of the initial crash, a two-vehicle accident occurred, but no injuries were reported.
Soon after, another multi-vehicle crash happened east of Bridgewood Road, involving eight vehicles. Two people suffered minor injuries and were transported to Saint Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan.
State Highway 23 east of State Highway 57 was reopened around noon.
Authorities say dense fog and drivers slowing in response to the initial crash were major contributing factors in the incidents. Officials are reminding motorists to slow down and use headlights during poor weather conditions.
All crashes remain under investigation.
